New season McCalls sewing patterns December 2023

We've added the latest McCalls sewing patterns to the website recently so I've recorded a round up of my favourite designs and shared fabrics you could sew them up in.

Here's a quick summary, read on for full details:

New McCalls Sewing Patterns and Fabrics

New McCalls Sewing Patterns Round Up

McCalls 8442 waistcoat pattern XS - XL

McCalls 8442 waistcoat vest pattern

I have been loving the revival of the waistcoat trend, especially when paired with wide leg trousers and worn with nothing underneath.

It was a great look for summer and in the winter months I've seen the same look for evening wear sewn up in satin or brocade fabrics for an extra luxe feel.

McCalls 8442 is a classic, unisex waistcoat pattern and looks like it has options for a relatively easy sew.

Choose from welt pockets, patch pockets, button down fastenings no fastenings, higher and lower necklines, colour blocking and a waist tie at the back.

This pattern runs up to an extra large, which is a 48" bust, 44" waist and 49" hip.

I would sew it up in our Mystique satin for a chic evening look.

McCalls 8438 coat pattern (4-12) and (12-20)

McCalls 8438 coat pattern

A gorgeous coat pattern with a large collar you can leave open or button down with a single button.

It is a wrap around coat with a belt waist tie, which was a very popular style this season and you can choose a sleeveless or long sleeved version and different hem lengths.

As far as coats go only having one buttonhole to worry about would make things slightly easier and the fit would be quite forgiving thanks to the wrap around style.

It runs up to a size 20 - a 42" bust, 34" waist and 44" hip.

I chose our dogtooth pink and black coating fabric and think this simple, chic coat pattern would show off the striking fabric beautifully.

McCalls 8437 Brandi Joan overalls pattern (6-14) and (16-24)

McCalls 8437 overalls dungaree pattern

The Brandi Joan overalls pattern would make a nice casual, contemporary outfit. The dungarees have a wide leg and sexy low cut racer back, which would look cute with a cropped vest top underneath in summer, plus all the classic details you would expect for a jeans style pattern: a patch pocket, jeans hardware details, jeans buttons and lots of options for lovely topstitching.

It runs up to a size 14 which is 36” Bust, 28” Waist, 38” hip.

I chose one of our classic indigo denims to sew it up in. I think a neutral colour would work well because you could put almost any top underneath giving you maximum outfit choices.

McCalls 8436 Brandi Joan Knit Dress pattern (6-14) and (16-24)

McCalls 8436 dress pattern

The Brandi Joan knit dress has a wide, square neckline, long sleeves and a skirt with almost a tulip design, which is tied at waist cinching the dress in at just the right place. There are also options for a mini or mid length to create two very different looks.

It runs up to a size 24 which is a 46” Bust, 39” waist, 48 hip.

I would make the mini version in our viscose jersey floral print fabric, which has a beautiful floral print design on a bamboo effect striped background.

McCalls 8434 Knit dress (4-12) and (12-20)

McCalls 8434 knit dress pattern

This knit dress has definite vintage vibes, I love the square neckline finished with a band that continues into the button band to fasten the dress at the centre front. I love the way a contrast fabric was chosen for the pattern packet and there is even a band across the patch pockets you can choose to finish with a contrast fabric too.

You can choose to create a more casual look with short sleeves and a shorter hem length or a more formal look with a midi length skirt and long sleeves.

It runs up to a size 20, which is a 42” bust, 34” waist, 44” hip.

The dress is designed to be sewn up in stable knits like pontes or cotton jerseys and I chose our ivory cadiz cotton jersey fabric, which also comes in black to recreate the pattern cover styling if you want to.

McCalls 8432 Vintage Trousers 90s (8-16) and (16-24)

McCalls 8432 trouser pattern

This pattern brought back a lot of memories! A vintage 1990s stirrup trousers pattern with a high waist and pleats at the front. I remember having many pairs of these pants in my wardrobe as a child of the 90s!

It runs up to a size 24 which is a 46” bust, 39” waist, 48 hip.

The recommended fabrics include wool crepe, wool double knits, wool blends, knits and jersey fabrics and corduroy.

I chose our Prestige crepe in the red/wine colourway, which I think would look great paired with a black turtle neck, polo neck, white shirt or even a patterned blouse.

Have fun sewing!
