Fabric Haul Vlog February 2018

This week's vlog is essentially me drooling over fabrics! I run through my picks from our latest range, pair them with patterns and make suggestions for creating garments to transition the seasons seamlessly. It's time to share the fabric love!

Transcript

Hi and welcome to the Sew Essential vlog, this week I'm excited to share some great new fabrics with you. There are quite a few to get through so I've organised them by fabric type and as always I'll be making suggestions for patterns you can pair them with too. I've also considered how you can make the suggested projects transition through the seasons.

Viscose Dressmaking Fabrics

We have two beautiful viscose fabrics to share. As you'd expect with viscose both have beautiful drape and movement.

We have this gorgeous berry coloured floral fabric, which I simply adore. This would look perfect made up into a blouse or dress. I think the Sewaholic Pendrell blouse with it's interesting sleeve variations would be a winning combination.

This geometric print fabric is a lovely original design with a real 70s vibe. Again I think this would look great as a blouse and I can just imagine Simplicity 1280 paired with jeans for a smart casual weekend outfit. Wear boots in the winter and wedges or pumps in the spring to transition effortlessly through the seasons.

Polyester Dressmaking Fabrics

We have some stunning polyester fabrics to share with you.

John Kaldor Polyesters

The first one is my absolute favourite. It is a John Kaldor called Ursula, which is a matt stretch medium weight satin. It has a luxurious feel, a good amount of body and is available in two colour ways.

I am planning a simple shift dress with this fabric and have chosen a tried and true pattern New Look 6095. I thought the simple lines of this pattern would work well with the bold print and I can wear it with tights and boots in the colder months then switch to strappy shoes for summer.

Next we have the John Kaldor Peaseblossom fabrics, which are lovely and lightweight perfect for pretty, feminine blouses. I'm planning a Sew Over It pussy bow blouse in the navy and cream colourway.

Polyester Crepes

The next two fabrics are these glorious crepes.

I am so excited by the bold colours and print on this fabric. It is a polyester crepe, but isn't as lightweight and floaty as some crepes. It is almost a similar weight to some scuba, but still has good drape and movement. I think it would look great made up as a pencil skirt paired with a plain top and strappy shoes. My go to pattern for a pencil skirt is always McCalls 3830. There are five options for length and from experience the fit was really good and it was a very simple sew.

The print on this next crepe is so delicate and pretty and screams spring to me. The flowers look like English meadow wild flowers and there is an array of pretty colours. This fabric is a similar weight to the previous one. I think it would work really well as Vogue 9267. There are options for a lovely fit and flare dress with a V cut out of the neckline, a fitted sleeveless shift dress and a fit and flare with sleeves amongst others. It would make a fantastic party dress for any special occasion.

This delightful bird print crepe is simply stunning. I think it would look great made up into one of the new Burda designs, 6439. The knee length option with batwing sleeves would make a lovely evening dress without being too dressy.

Polyester Satin

Dark florals are here to stay and this polyester satin with silky soft touch, fantastic drape and floral/bird print is super sexy and chic. I think the Sewaholic Yaletown dress/top would work brilliantly in this fabric. It is a wrap dress at the top, but the skirt doesn't have a split so no worries about displaying your knickers in a brisk spring breeze!

Cotton Dressmaking Fabrics

Cotton Lawns

If you haven't tried our beautiful cotton lawn range yet the forthcoming spring/summer season is the perfect excuse! The quality of these fabrics is absolutely beautiful and the prints are lovely and unique. They have a lovely drape and good movement for a cotton fabric as you can see. These tropical prints are going to be very fashionable this year and I'm sure you'll agree the colours are beautiful.

1610 simplicity 8146

Last year I made a Hollyburn skirt in one of the cotton lawn fabrics, which I think would work well. However, I would be really tempted to make a jumsuit or loose fitting trousers out of these tropical beauties. Simplicity 8146 looks like a nice easy sew and would be a lovely comfortable, casual every day wear jumpsuit. We have a filter for jumpsuit patterns on the website if you prefer an alternative style.

Jersey Dressmaking Fabrics

This John Kaldor Portia fabric has a lovely subtle sheen to it and great stretch and recovery. I think it would look lovely made up as a wrap top such as the Dartmouth top by Cashmerette, designed with curvy figures in mind. Alternatively I'd love to see it made up into another one of the brand new Burda designs 6443. I know wrap dresses have featured quite heavily in this vlog, but they are certainly on trend and perfect for the new season.

This black spotty jersey would also work well as a wrap top. A nice alternative to the Cashmerette Dartmouth pattern is the Gertie Butterick 6285 pattern.

I hope you've enjoyed that whistlestop tour of some of our lovely new fabrics. There are a few more already on the website and more to be added in the coming weeks so make sure you pop on and have a look.

Have fun sewing!
