Sew the autumn trends 2025: Part 2

Autumn has well and truly arrived, which means one thing for many of us: peak sewing season. The days are cooler, the nights are darker and there is nothing nicer than curling up with a cup of tea, your sewing machine and a gorgeous new project. In this round-up I’m sharing the key autumn sewing trends for 2025 and, more importantly, the patterns and fabrics you can use to recreate them at home.

This is part two of my autumn trends series, so if you missed part one do have a look as well – there are even more ideas in there, including quilted fabrics and cosy layers.

Wool coats

Blouses

Sporty trousers

Knit dresses

Trend 1: wool coats you’ll wear for years

A good wool coat never really goes out of style and for autumn/winter 2025 they’re everywhere again. On the high street and the catwalks we’re seeing:

  • Maxi-length coats and longer line styles
  • A lot of check coatings
  • Classic tan, camel and earthy tones
  • Wrap coats with tie belts
  • Generous collars and lapels
  • Both single and double-breasted fronts

If you have never sewn a coat before, it can feel a bit daunting, but honestly it is far more achievable than you might think. Because coats are worn over layers, the fitting is often more forgiving than a fitted dress or blouse, and you’ll end up with a piece you can wear day in, day out for years.

Wool coat sewing patterns to try

1. Know Me 2001 – wrap coat with belt
A beautiful, contemporary take on the wrap coat trend. Know Me 2001 features:

  • Classic collar and lapel
  • Straight, sleek silhouette
  • Tie belt to cinch the waist
  • Lovely epaulettes on the sleeves

It is the perfect pattern if you like that softly structured, robe-style coat that still feels polished. It works brilliantly in our checked coatings or any of our plains.

2. Butterick 7007 – classic double-breasted coat

Butterick 7007 is one of those wardrobe staples that never really dates. Details include:

  • Collar and lapel with a double-breasted front
  • Welt pockets for a professional finish
  • Straight sleeve with a deep cuff
  • Centre back seam for shaping

Although it’s very on trend this season, it is also the kind of wool coat that will look stylish for many years.

3. Tessuti Richmond Coat – modern, oversized look

The Richmond coat from Tessuti Fabrics is ideal if you prefer a slightly more relaxed, modern silhouette:

  • Single-breasted front
  • Collar and lapel
  • Angled welt pockets
  • Drop shoulders and oversized shape
  • Longer midi-to-maxi length

The drop sleeve makes fitting around the shoulders easier and gives that contemporary, slightly slouchy look that works beautifully with jeans, tailoring or dresses.

Coating fabrics for autumn 2025

To bring these coat patterns to life, we’ve had some stunning new coating fabrics arrive:

  • 100% wool camel and pink check
A beautifully soft wool with that all-important camel base, accented with pink and deep navy/black checks. It feels luxurious, has a lovely weight and would make a real statement wrap coat or Richmond-style coat.
  • High wool-content camel coating (97% wool)
This plain camel coating has a higher weight and more structure than the checks, which is ideal for tailored coats. With 97% wool and 3% polyamide, it feels incredibly premium but is still very reasonably priced for the fibre content.
  • 100% wool understated navy check
A classic navy coating with the most subtle fine check in red, pale blue, tan and a lilac tone. The check is very restrained, so it gives interest without shouting. Perfect if you want something sophisticated that still feels special.
  • Green wool mix coating (55% wool)
A beautiful seaweed green shade with subtle flecks that stop it feeling flat. This one is softer and drapier than the heavier camel but weightier than the checks, so it is a great all-rounder for coats and jackets.

Trend 2: romantic blouses with subtle details

Blouses are doing a lot of heavy lifting this autumn. They are perfect with jeans, trousers and skirts and an easy way to bring colour into your wardrobe when everything else is navy, camel and black.

For autumn 2025, blouse trends are leaning towards:

  • Understated frills rather than full-on ruffles
  • Oversized collars with delicate frilled edges
  • Boho details such as ties and trumpet sleeves
  • Cord and denim shirts
  • Fun prints that add a pop of colour

Blouse sewing patterns to sew now

1. Itch to Stitch Majorelle Shirt and Dress

We’re very excited to be stocking Itch to Stitch patterns as PDFs, and the Majorelle Shirt and Dress is a perfect example of the brand’s modern, elegant style. Features include:

  • Button-down front
  • Raglan sleeves (unusual and very comfortable in a shirt)
  • Stand collar with a soft ruffle around the edge
  • Gentle gathers under the collar at the front and back
  • Option to sew as a shirt or a dress
  • Very size-inclusive, running to a 60" bust

Despite all the details, it is still a relatively straightforward sew and the raglan construction can be kinder to fit around the shoulders.

2. Burda 6146

Burda 6146 is one of those sleeper patterns that can easily be overlooked, but it is ideal for this year’s blouse trends. You’ll find:

  • A simple V-neck option for everyday wear
  • A second view with a V-shaped keyhole, stand collar and ruffled edge
  • Neck tie detail
  • Pretty trumpet sleeves
  • No zips or buttons on the main body, so it is quick to sew

If you want a new blouse in an afternoon, this is a very good candidate.

3. Friday Pattern Company Patina Blouse

The Patina Blouse has become a bit of a favourite at Sew Essential and it fits perfectly with the preppy, slightly retro looks popping up this season.

  • V-neck button-down blouse
  • Bust darts for shaping without feeling too fitted
  • Long sleeves gathered into a narrow cuff, with a soft balloon shape
  • Short sleeve option
  • Yoke and gathers at the back
  • Size-inclusive up to a 59" bust

I’ve made this one myself and always get compliments when I wear it. The only thing to flag is that if you have long arms you might want to double-check the sleeve length or lengthen them slightly.

Fabrics for autumn blouses

For blouse fabrics, think drape, colour and a little bit of personality:

  • Emerald green crepe with black print
A beautifully drapey crepe with a matte finish, easy to handle and ideal for both blouses and dresses.
  • Silky print
A stunning teal-and-orange print on a silky base with excellent movement. It feels luxurious without being flimsy.
  • Soft, non-shiny printed dress fabric
A super soft, beautifully drapey cloth with a striking print that works equally well for blouses and dresses when you want something special but comfortable.

All of these would be lovely for the Itch to Stitch, Burda or Patina patterns, and you can mix and match according to how bold you want your blouse to be.

Trend 3: wide-leg knit trousers with side stripes

Comfy trousers that still feel chic are very much having a moment and I, for one, am delighted. One specific look that keeps appearing is wide-leg knit trousers with a side stripe.

You can keep it simple and sporty, or lean into a smarter day look by pairing them with:

  • Blazers and shirts
  • Leather jackets
  • Cosy cardigans and knit jumpers

They are incredibly versatile and, crucially, incredibly comfortable.

Trouser sewing patterns for this look

1. Fibre Mood Perry Trousers

The Fibre Mood Perry trousers are a PDF pattern we now stock and they are such a good example of this trend:

  • Wide leg silhouette
  • Elasticated waistband with optional ties
  • Side seam pockets
  • Built-in side stripe detail, including instructions for adding decorative ribbon

You can keep the stripe subtle or really have fun with contrast colours and trims.

2. Mimi G 3036 Trousers

Mimi G 3036 is another pattern that works brilliantly for side-stripe jogger-style trousers:

  • Elasticated waist with drawstring
  • Side seam pockets
  • Pleat at the front leg
  • Easy to adapt with an added side stripe

Between these two patterns you can create everything from off-duty lounge trousers to something you would happily wear to a brunch or even a casual office.

Fabrics for comfy-but-polished trousers

Look for fabrics with enough weight for trousers, some drape and, ideally, a little stretch:

  • Dynasty stretch twill
A woven suiting with a touch of stretch that has been used for TV costumes on a very famous show. It has beautiful drape and is perfect for smart trousers that still move with you.
  • Gabardine
A classic trouser fabric. We have a gorgeous olive shade that Vicky from our team used for the Made by Rae Rose Pants and they looked fantastic. It sews beautifully and is a great option if you prefer wovens.
  • Ponte Roma knits
Our new pontes are a dream for autumn and winter trousers: stable, warm, with good stretch and recovery. Colours include burgundy, navy, olive, purple and other rich autumnal tones.

Trend 4: pinafore dresses (the easy layering hero)

Pinafore dresses are everywhere this season and for good reason. They are comfortable, easy to style and perfect for layering with:

  • Turtlenecks
  • Blouses and shirts
  • Fine knit jumpers

A lot of the high-street inspiration leans into shorter hemlines worn with knee-high boots and bare-effect tights for a slightly more “mini” look. If that is not your style, it’s very easy to adapt the trend by choosing (or lengthening to) knee-length or midi-length and wearing opaque tights instead.

Pinafore dress sewing patterns

1. Simplicity 1609 – vintage pinafore

This is the pattern I used for the pinafore I’m wearing in the video, and it is such a gem:

  • Simple A-line silhouette
  • Classic French darts coming from the side seam into the bust
  • Fish darts at the back for shaping
  • Round neck or optional Peter Pan collar
  • Bow detail option for that preppy touch

There are only two main pattern pieces, so it is a very approachable project if you are newer to garment sewing.

2. Fibre Mood Deliz Dress

Deliz is a more contemporary take on the pinafore:

  • Deep V-neck front
  • Midi length with front slit
  • Side zip
  • Bust darts for shaping

You can shorten it if you prefer, or leave it longer for an elegant layered look.

3. Viki Sews Stacy Dress

The Stacy dress has a deep V-neck and a trapeze, free-hanging silhouette:

  • Bust darts and neck darts for shape
  • No fastenings, thanks to the deep V
  • Easy to pull on and off

If you like the idea of a pinafore dress but do not want to tackle zips, this is a great option.

Fabrics for pinafores

Baby needlecord, gabardine and ponte are all perfect here:

  • Baby needlecord
Soft and cosy without being too heavy. We have a brick red/rust shade, a classic camel and a navy. All three are ideal for pinafores, skirts and even shirts.
  • Gabardine
Gives a slightly smarter, more structured pinafore that still feels comfortable.
  • Ponte
Perfect if you want the look of a dress with the comfort of a knit. Great with the deeper V-neck styles.

Trend 5: simple knit dresses with preppy details

Finally, knit dresses are a big part of autumn dressing this year. Think simple shapes with interesting collars, contrast bands and subtle details:

  • Soft shift dresses with turtlenecks
  • Oversized collared T-shirt dresses
  • Preppy double-breasted fronts
  • Contrast edging on collars and plackets
  • Ruffle or bow details

In a double knit or ponte they look polished but feel like secret pyjamas, which is exactly the vibe many of us want for winter.

Knit dress sewing patterns to consider

1. Mimi G 9740 – relaxed collared knit dress

This pattern gives that easy T-shirt dress look with a bit of structure:

  • Grown-on sleeve (no separate sleeve piece)
  • Small collar with a continuous placket
  • Loose fit
  • Knee-length or midi option

Great if you want something cosy and casual that still looks thought-through.

2. Simplicity 9466 – preppy 1960s style

This vintage-inspired pattern captures the contrast-trim trend perfectly:

  • Fitted shift dress with a cute collar
  • Double-breasted front
  • Ideal for contrast bands and buttons

Sew it in a solid ponte and add ivory or white contrast on the collar and front for that classic preppy look.

3. Simplicity 9845 – clean, modern knit dress

Another 1960s-inspired pattern that feels very current:

  • Stand-up neckline (not quite a turtleneck, but similar)
  • Raglan sleeves, which can be easier to fit through the shoulders
  • Bust darts
  • Optional short or long sleeves
  • Gentle A-line skirt
  • Fish darts at the back for subtle shaping

There are only a handful of main pieces, so it would be a fast, satisfying sew and a brilliant wardrobe basic.

Ponte knits for cosy dresses

Our pontes come into their own for these styles. They are:

  • Warm and comfortable for autumn and winter
  • Stable enough for beginners to handle
  • Available in a range of rich colours such as burgundy, olive, purple, navy and charcoal

Once you have one knit dress you love, it is very hard not to immediately plan three more.
