The Great British Sewing Bee Contestants 2016

We've all been waiting for this moment since February last year - well we at Sew Essential have anyway! The Sewing Bee is back and the first of eight episodes starts on BBC 2 on Monday the 16th of May at 9 o'clock. There's simply nothing better than sipping a cuppa glass of wine, settling down and watching the drama unfold. It never ceases to amaze me how the contestants manage to cope and sew under all that pressure and it is a joy to see the amazing creative designs that pop up along the way.

It goes without saying Patrick is a big draw to the show too - I never tire of watching a perfectly groomed man in a tailor-made Saville Row suit, particularly when he owns the tailors! I can't wait to see new judge Esme Young in action - with her glittering career and credentials in fashion she will be sure to bring plenty to the cutting table. Finally watching Claudia mother and support the contestants through their once in a lifetime journey is always so heart warming and here's a round up of whose tears she will be mopping up and who's laughter and elation she will be sharing this year...

The Sporty Sewer

Angeline

Angeline started sewing 10 years ago when she made a pair of curtains for her future hubby. Fast forward to the Sewing Bee 2016 and she is an accomplished seamstress who loves nothing more than glamorous gowns and 1950s inspired fashion. She's also a keen athlete having completed eight marathons (I feel tired just thinking about that) so she will certainly have the stamina to get through the eight weeks of sewing if she's got what it takes.

The Scientific Sewer

Charlotte

Charlotte is a Senior Editor for a medical research journal by day and committed seamstress by night. She has been sewing since she was a little girl and enjoys making clothes for herself and her children. Charlotte wears all her own designs right down to her undies! We've got a feeling she'll have the formula right when it comes to the precision sewing tasks.

The Sew Bored of the High Street Sewer

Duncan

Duncan took matters into his own hands when he was uninspired by the offerings of the men's high street stores and started sewing. He likes to look to designers and catwalk fashion for inspiration these days so watch this space for some creative flair!

The Sew Determined Sewer

Ghislaine

Ghislaine is a self taught sewer who consulted with her Mom over the phone whenever she got stuck - tutoring and learning sewing over the phone, now that's what I call clever! Ghislaine is also bi-lingual and loves making bright clothes inspired by her Caribbean heritage. We reckon she'll be the one to work out the tasks the quickest with those communication skills.

The Swimming Sewer

Jade

Jade used to spend her spare time swimming, but all this changed after she suffered an injury and she now works as a swimming instructor alongside her studies. In her spare time she loves nothing more than to swim amongst fabrics, habby and sewing patterns creating designs for all of her family, even her dogs! Jade is only 18 and is the youngest contestant to ever appear on the show...no pressure then?!

The Stay At Home Dad Sewer

Jamie

Jamie used to work as a teacher, but decided to become a stay at home dad after his son Harry was born deaf. While Harry sleeps Jamie sews and we've enjoyed seeing many of his tailored designs via his social media accounts and blog. He is a stickler for the rules and likes to do things the right way using his studious nature to learn the ropes from books bought in charity shops.

The Stumbled On It Sewer

Josh

Josh is a sports fanatic who describes himself as a 'lad's lad' so it was a great surprise to him and his friends when he stumbled across a sewing machine at his parents' house and became hooked on sewing. His mates have stopped laughing now and are all queuing up to use his alteration skills these days.

The Soaring Sewer

Joyce

Joyce met her husband through a common love of gliding so we reckon she'll definitely be able to hold her nerve when the going gets tough. She has a large family and enjoys sewing for them with her piece de resistance being her daughter's wedding dress. Now she is retired she has plenty of time for sewing so no doubt she will have had a lot of practice in the run up to the show and with those nerves of steel she could go far.

The Studious Sewer

Rumana

Rumana's Mom used to make all her clothes when she was a child and Rumana followed in her footsteps enjoying making clothes for her dolls. As she got older studying to become a doctor took up all of her time, but when her graduation day was fast approaching she wanted to make something beautiful to wear and started sewing again. Sewing helps Rumana to unwind after her busy and stressful days working as a junior doctor.

The School Teacher Sewer

Tracey

Tracey is from our neck of the woods - good old Derbyshire! She is now retired from her school teacher role, but spent many years sewing up requests from her pupils. She taught her daughter to sew and used to sew clothes for her children to save money when they were younger, but now she sews for good old fashioned fun.

So there you have it, a run down of the sewers we will grow to know and love over the coming weeks and don't forget to watch out for our super giveaways, discounts and makes we will be sharing to join in on the fun.

Have fun sewing!
