Sewing Ideas and Inspiration
My favourite thing about the arrival of a new season is the exciting new sewing projects. I love nothing more than leafing my way through a fashion magazine spotting the trends I plan to sew. Here is a quick round up of some of the key trends this season and the patterns and fabrics you can use to recreate them. Fear not, the focus is firmly on wearable garments rather than crazy fashion fads.
One of my favourite trends this season are the beautiful florals perfect for brightening up those dull winter days.
Wrap dresses in floaty, woven fabrics are a prominent trend. Team with ankle boots and a leather biker jacket for an up to date look or with a smart tailored coat and court shoes for classic style. Recreate the look with this 70s inspired pattern...
...in any of these dreamy fabrics.

Alternatively these delightfully drapey fabrics would make a very pretty 70s inspired pussy bow blouse.
Another option is this Vogue pattern, a truly timeless classic. I love view B with it's collar, three quarter length sleeves and straight skirt. It would be the perfect excuse to sew up this stunning floral scuba. You can read about sewing with scuba here.
Suits and suiting are everywhere. The good news is, anything goes from oversized boyish tailoring to a more traditional fit. Grey checked fabrics are certainly very popular and I also spotted those timeless classics dogtooth and boucle.
This pattern would make a lovely classic trouser suit...
...and would work very well in any of these fabrics...

Another option would be to make a simple jacket such as this stylish collarless number. Our boucle suiting fabric would be ideal.

If you haven't already noticed red is the colour of the season. There's something for everyone from all out pillar box red to more understated berry tones. The good news is we have a whole raft of fabrics in these shades to choose from.
Our Prestige crepe is available in plum, red and wine. The most beautiful quality and with excellent drape it is perfect for party dresses.
Pair it with this contemporary shift dress pattern, perfect for shimmying across that dancefloor. Or how about this stylish jumpsuit pattern so you can really bust some moves?!
Our satin backed crepe in burgundy, Duchesse satin and taffeta in scarlet and faux silk dupion in wine are also guaranteed to make you the belle of the ball.
If you fancy a super comfy and cosy option tick two trend boxes at once with our sumptuous stretch velvet in wine. You could have this simple swing dress knocked up in no time.

Why not push the boat out and try sewing with faux fur this winter? This is another major Autumn Winter trend at all the big design houses.
We have the most luxurious Astrakhan fur, so super soft and shiny you will want to stroke it all day long.
This McCalls pattern gives you a number of options to try. I love view D and know I would treasure it forever. A gilet is a great little project and this Simplicity pattern is a nice, simple make.
If fur isn't your thing try a belted coat or jacket with a cinched in waist. This pattern from the new Simplicity range would look great in one of our wool mix coating fabrics. I would choose our plain wool poly available in kingfisher, cranberry or charcoal for view A or our wine and pink tweed for view D.
