What Are Patterned Stretch Jersey Fabrics and What Are They Used For?

Patterned stretch jersey fabrics have prints and designs on them such as flowers, stripes, spots, geometric designs, abstract prints and we pride ourselves on stocking a fun range to help your sewing ideas come to life.

They are made by interlocking loops of the yarns to create stretch and flexibility making them very comfortable to wear and, if desired, they can be very close fitting.

You can use patterned stretch jersey also known as knit fabrics to create a range of garments.

They are incredibly popular for children’s clothing and sports or lounge wear thanks to the stretch and comfort factor, however, you can also sew other types of clothing too. Patterned stretch fabrics are often used to sew dresses, tops, trousers, skirts, cardigans, jackets and jumpsuits.

Some patterned stretch jersey fabrics are more stable than others meaning they are less stretchy such as sweatshirt fabric, ponte roma and scuba. Fabrics like cotton jersey, viscose jersey and lighter weight polyester stretch or knit fabrics are usually stretchier and can have more drape.

Always consult your sewing pattern instructions for information on the best fabrics to use – there will often be a marker to test the amount of stretch in a fabric for patterns designed for stretch fabrics. If you are usure don’t hesitate to ask us and our expert team will be happy to help.

If these aren’t quite the fabrics you were looking for take a look at our full dressmaking fabric range.
