Plain woven fabrics are a single, solid colour and they are created by interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles to each other. The majority of woven fabrics won’t have any stretch at all, although some stretch wovens might have a little bit of stretch built into them and you will always find this information in our detailed product descriptions.
If the fabric is a stretch woven it will still usually have a lot less stretch than knit or jersey fabrics and often won’t be suitable for sewing patterns designed for stretch or knit fabrics. You can check the details for your sewing pattern in the instructions or on the packet where this information is usually provided and, of course, we can help you if you are unsure too.
We aim to stock a wide range of colours in plain woven fabrics from neutrals through to bold and pastel colours and you can use them to create a range of garments, accessories and homewares depending on the properties of that particular fabric.
If you are sewing something that requires structure you might want to choose a heavier weight plain woven fabric such as denim or cotton twill, but if you are sewing something that requires drape and movement you might want to choose a lighter weight plain woven fabric such as viscose, cotton lawn or a lighter weight linen.
