What are Universal Sewing Machine Needles Used For?
Universal sewing machine needles are ideal for general fabrics and thread types. Their slightly rounded point allows them to move smoothly through normal weight woven fabrics like cotton, linen and polyester.
The needles that came with your sewing machine were likely universal size 80/12, so if you’re looking to replace them, that’s the size to go for. If you are sewing lightweight woven fabrics, looks at size 60/8 or 70/10, and for heavier fabrics use a 90/14 and above.
For more specialised fabrics you will get the best results using a needle that's specifically designed for the task. While universal needles are suitable for a variety of fabrics, specialised options - like ballpoint needles for stretch knits or denim needles for heavy fabrics - are better suited for specific materials. Check out our full range of sewing machine needles and have a look at the information at the bottom of that page.
