Fabric Haul September 2018

Like it or not the seasons will be changing so here's our first instalment of Autumn Winter 2018 fabrics. This is just a snippet of the full range, but it's enough to get the creative juices flowing. Settle down, grab a cuppa and be prepared to swoon.

As always all of the fabrics and patterns I talk about are available on our website and you can find the link below.

John Kaldor Coral Stretch Crepe Fabric

First up this John Kaldor coral stretch crepe, which comes in two designs and two colour ways.

We have a monochrome version, which has a black background with these lovely white brush strokes across it.

Then there's this gorgeous tropical inspired design with leaves and flowers in red and black with a neutral background. Leaf inspired prints featured heavily on the AW catwalks at all the major fashion shows so you'll be bang on trend with these designs. I also think it's nice to see splashes of colour in the Autumn Winter ranges this year - who says everything has to be dark just because the sky is?!

I would be tempted to make a nice simple shift dress in either of these fabrics. I think the Sew Over It Zoe dress would work brilliantly and would take you from the office to a night out seamlessly.

John Kaldor Santa Cruz Fabric

Next up we have this beautiful John Kaldor Santa Cruz fabric. This is a medium weight satin with a smooth sheen and slight stretch. Again check out the bright splashes of red, blue and green - perfect for injecting some colour into your Autumn Winter wardrobe.

For me this would have to be a stunning evening dress such as New Look 6670 - the view the model is wearing. I think the dress would show the print off well, but the V neck and the fact it is sleeveless also mean you have enough skin on show to balance the strong print out.

John Kaldor Juliet Fabric

Here we have the John Kaldor Juliet in navy and gold - such a gorgeous combo! The floral print looks like tulips scattered across the fabric and again more bright splashes of colour for your Autumn Winter wardrobe.

Juliet is a lightweight and soft polyester perfect for tops and dresses. It has a lovely soft feel to it almost like a peachskin. I would be tempted to make a nice blouse out of this such as one of my favourite patterns of all time - the Sew Over It pussy bow blouse. This pattern is super easy to make with no fastenings and would work really well with this lovely drapey fabric.

John Kaldor Peaseblossom Fabric

I am more than a little bit in love with this John Kaldor peaseblossom fabric in saffron. I'm not normally big on yellow, but oh my goodness, can we all just take a moment to admire the beauty?! I can just see this teamed with thick black tights and boots to brighten up those murky winter days or to glow in the Autumn sunshine.

We also have these dramatic designs in plum and red and black and blush.

Peaseblossom is a light to medium weight crepe and I would love to make a blouse or dress out of this beauty. I thought this Burda 6425 wrap blouse looked like a nice option with pleats on the shoulder and ruffled sleeves for an interesting bit of detail. I also like the way there is a ruffle at the cuff, but it wouldn't get in the way of a cardigan or jacket. Paired with black skinny jeans and ankle boots this would be a lovely Autumn Winter look.

For a dress I think I'd go for a simple shift dress such as this New Look 6540 view C. Paired with black tights, ankle boots and a leather jacket I know I'd feel smart, but comfortable.

John Kaldor Portia Fabric

Here we have the John Kaldor Portia fabrics and I think they've really pulled it out of the bag this season! There is this pretty floral design on a black or sage background.  The flower make me think of pretty blossoms and the contrast of colours is stunning. Then we have this multicoloured one with a neutral background and beautiful splashes of colour in the floral design. This is right up my street!

Portia fabric is a polyester jersey and me and Angela are always talking about how lovely it is to wear. I have a few things in this fabric and it is soft, drapey and feels lovely against the skin. It washes beautifully and I just can't recommend it highly enough.

I would be tempted to make a nice wrap dress out of these fabrics such as this Burda 6443 which also has a wrap top pattern included.

John Kaldor Velvet Knit

I am SO excited about these beautiful printed velvets folks. We know velvet is going to be big again this season in the fashion stakes and why wouldn't it be? Soft, luxurious, warm and shiny - what more could you wish for in winter?!

This particular velvet is so, so soft and has fantastic drape. I am in love with the teal and blush colourway and the navy and purple colourway is stunning too. I really hope I get around to making something in this fabric, my plan would be to make a bodycon dress like this Burda 6848. I can just see me wearing this on Christmas day or out to dinner even. I've also seen people make lovely dramatic maxi dresses in this patterned velvet for some real wow factor.

We also have a new colour in the Carlotta stretch velvet - navy. These fabrics are also perfect for sweatshirts such as the Linden sweatshirt pattern which is always very popular.

John Kaldor Luxor Sequin Fabric

I am a huge lover of sequins and all things sparkly so I am so excited to have these sequin fabrics in stock. We've got it in navy, black and have rose gold in the pipeline too. Simple shift dresses, mini skirts and boleros/evening jackets would all look fantastic in these fabrics and would be a perfect way to add some sparkle to your handmade wardrobe.

Have fun sewing!
