Janome J3-24 Sewing Machine
The Janome J3-24 sits at the top of the J3 range of sewing machines. Not only does it include all the features of the other two models, but also has 24 stitches, variable stitch width for increased versatility and a hard cover.
The J3-24 has 24 stitch functions which are divided between decorative and utility stitches - many of which you are able to adjust the stitch length and width for fine control. You can straight stitch with the needle in either the central position, or move the needle over to the left hand side of the foot. This is useful for sewing piping or when you need to stitch close to the edge of the fabric. Zigzag stitching is widely used for overcasting and sewing on buttons.
For finishing raw edges of fabric, the Janome J3-24 has a number of useful utility stitches. The overcasting stitch is used on the seam allowance to prevent the fabric from fraying on raw edges. For synthetic fabrics that tend to pucker, the tricot stitch can be used to prevent fraying and can also be used for mending tears or darning. This knit stitch is ideal for sewing swimwear and stretch velour because it provides the greatest amount of elasticity and strength. The straight stretch stitch is great for knit fabrics and curved trouser seams etc where you require a seam that does not tear easily. The stretch stitch does what it says on the tin - it sews two stitches forward and one stitch back to create a stretchable stitch.
There are also great time saving features for button and zips. The J3-24 allows you to sew buttons directly onto the fabric and also sews button holes using the included buttonhole foot in one simple step. There is also the facility to sew a corded buttonhole which can be used for tailored garment where you need a stronger buttonhole. The zipper foot simplifies sewing on zips - simply guide the zip teeth along the edge of the zipper foot to get a neat and tidy finish.
There are also a number of decorative stitches. The shell tuck stitch enables you to stitch along a folded edge of fabric creating a decorative shell edge. The smocking stitch enables you to stitch on top of pleated fabric for a decorative finish, whilst the box stitch is used to join heavy weight fabrics. There is also an applique stitch for attaching appliques pieces to your fabric and 4 decorative satin stitch patterns for creating borders and edgings.
There are a number of other useful time-saving and decorative features. There is a built-in needle threader making it easy to thread your machine and a one-handed thread cutter. The accessory tray is removable to enable free arm sewing - great for stitching cuffs, trouser legs and other circular garment areas. It also allows you to drop the feed dogs so that you can sew whilst moving the fabric manually under the needle in any direction for freehand embroidery. The seam guides on the needle plate allow you to achieve a more accurate finish and the reverse stitch can be used to secure the start or end of your stitching. It also includes a hard plastic cover to protect your machine whilst in storage or during transportation.
