► How do I know which presser foot to use?
Unlike sewing machine accessories there usually aren’t too many different categories of machine for the different feet. On each of the products on our website you will find a list of compatible machines and if you can’t find the ones for your machine don’t hesitate to ask and we will be happy to help.
In terms of finding the right foot for the job, for most overlocker and coverstitch feet and accessories the name makes the purpose of the foot clear. For example, a piping and cording foot can be used to sew, you guessed it, piping or cording! Some are less obvious, such as a flat sole foot, however, if you check the product descriptions there is usually a detailed description how and when to use the foot. Just in case you’re interested, a flat sole foot is used to slide over heavy or textured fabrics or bulky seams.
► What is a coverstitch binding attachment used for?
A coverstitch binding attachment allows you to feed a strip of fabric through the attachment, whilst simultaneously feeding through the raw edge of the main fabric of the garment or sewing project so that the edge is finished with a bias binding and neatly stitched in place with a coverstitch.
It is commonly used around necklines or armholes on jersey or knit garments and is easier than trying to distribute the band of fabric around the neckline or armhole manually. It takes the guesswork out of it for you and stitches it down perfectly.
It can also be used on craft, quilt and home dec projects to finish the edges too and is seriously satisfying once you’ve mastered it.
► Do I really need extra feet and accessories for my overlocker or coverstitch machine?
Like sewing machines, these extras aren’t essential, but if you want to make certain tasks quicker and easier, or you want to stretch your skills and try more specialist things the feet and accessories are incredibly helpful.
There are also other useful accessories for some machines like extension tables, which are great if you’re working on bigger projects and want to support the fabric.
The only accessories that are essential eventually are the replacement blades and you can choose to do this at home, we have a great tutorial to guide you through the process, it is easier than it sounds!
► What is the most useful additional overlocker foot to buy?
Piping/cording feet and gathering feet are incredibly popular with both dressmakers and crafters and quilters alike. The piping foot has a groove underneath to ensure the piping feeds through accurately and is stitched evenly. The gathering foot allows you to gather one piece of fabric and attach it to a non gathered piece of fabric.
Baby Lock do some excellent, very practical feet such as a clear curve foot to give the user more visibility as they sew with their overlocker and the flat sole foot mentioned earlier, which is helpful for sewing over bulky seams.
You can also buy sets of feet for the Baby Lock range, which make it more economical to stretch those sewing skills and be more adventurous!
