Quilt batting, also known as quilt wadding, is a layer of material used in quilts and other similar textile projects. It is placed between the quilt top and the backing fabric to provide warmth, structure, and thickness to the finished product. The choice of batting can significantly affect the look, feel, and functionality of a quilt. The choice of quilt batting depends on factors like the desired warmth, drape, weight, and how the quilt will be used. Additionally, some battings are specifically designed for machine quilting, while others are better suited for hand quilting. Always refer to the manufacturer's recommendations for care and washing instructions for the specific type of batting you choose.

Cotton batting is natural, breathable, and provides a traditional look and feel to the quilt. It tends to be lightweight and is suitable for both hand and machine quilting.

Polyester batting is synthetic and often has a higher loft, making it thicker and warmer. It is also less prone to shrinking than cotton batting and is a good choice for quilts that will be washed frequently.

Wool batting is made from sheep's wool and provides excellent insulation. It is warm, lightweight, and has a natural resilience. Wool batting is a good choice for both warm and cool climates.

Some battings are made by blending different fibres, such as a cotton and polyester blend batting. This can combine the best characteristics of each material.
