Read on for a detailed round up of our top eight sewing patterns, which only require 1m of fabric.

8 Favourite Sewing Patterns Requiring Only 1m of Fabric

Top 8 Sewing Patterns for 1m of Fabric

Style Arc Bonnie Woven Top

The best thing about the Style Arc Bonnie top is that it is really size inclusive and runs up to a size 30 - a 58 1/4" bust, 50 1/2" waist and 61" hip.

The sleeveless version only requires 1m of fabric and the version with a grown on sleeve requires just a little bit more (although it is often the case you can squeeze it out of 1m too).

It is a very simple shell top with options for top stitching, bust darts and a very cute button-down feature at the back, which just adds that extra little bit of detail and makes it extra fun to sew and wear.

It is designed to be sewn up in woven fabrics and the fabric I chose for the Bonnie top is this gorgeous Robert Kaufman chambray fabric, which I always think is just so pretty. It has a lovely purply, bluey hue and has cute little neon flecks running through it. I thought it would be fun to do the top stitching in some neon thread or to use neat little neon buttons on the back to make those neon flecks pop.

Friday Pattern Company Square Neck Top

The Square Neck Top by the Friday Pattern Company is another very size inclusive design and runs in sizes from an extra small to a7X.

Square neck tops have been so fashionable in recent years and the boxy shape is super contemporary too. The grown on sleeve makes it easy to sew and fit as an extra bonus!

The top can be made with less than a metre of fabric up to the medium size and then it's a metre and a half for the larger sizes after that. The medium size goes up to 37" bust, 29" waist and 38" hip.

The Square Neck Top can be sewn in knit or woven fabrics and the fabric I chose for this one is this gorgeous cotton jersey fabric, which would look beautiful paired with your favourite jeans.

Megan Nielsen Eucalypt Tank and Dress

The Eucalypt dress and top by Megan Nielsen runs up to a size 20 which is a 46" bust 38" waist and 48" hip. If your fabric is 60" (150cm) wide you can make views A and B, which are the tank top, with one metre of fabric right up to a size 20 and the dress, which is view C and D, with 1.1m of fabric up to a size 20. Again you could probably squeeze the size 20 dress out of 1 metre.

The Eucalypt dress is a lovely, loose fitting casual dress or tank top with a centre-back seam, a scoop neckline, a curved hem and French seams for a super neat finish.

I think it would look great sewn up in this cotton lawn fabric which is just so summery and perfect for a simple dress or tank that you could just chuck on to pop out to the shops or go to the beach.

Chalk and Notch Victory Tank

Another size inclusive pattern is the Chalk and Notch Victory tank, which runs up to a size 30 - 58" bust 49" waist and 59" hip.

You can sew the Chalk and Notch tank with a lining, which would require additional lining fabric, but you only require 0.9m of the main fabric to make sizes 0 to 24 or 1.4m of fabric for sizes 26 - 30 (if you fabric is 54" wide).

It is another lovely tank top, but it has an original strap detail across the chest and is designed to fit closely at the bust and hang and drape loosely across the body.

It is designed for fabrics like rayon and lightweight cotton lawn, something with good drape and movement.

I think it would look so pretty made up in this gorgeous deadstock viscose challis fabric.

Tessuti Romy Top

The Romy top by Tessuti runs up to a size extra large - a 42" bust, 37" waist and 46" hip.

The size extra large requires 1.1 metres of fabric again so ever so slightly over a metre, but often there is enough allowance built into pattern fabric allowances that you can squeeze it out of one metre.

The Romy top is a halter neck, boxy vest top with spaghetti straps. It screams Tessuti's usual signature chic and classic style.

The Romy can be sewn up in woven fabrics and I thought it would look very pretty in this cotton lawn print. I just love the retro vibes and think it would look great paired with denim.

Megan Nielsen Harper Shorts

The Megan Nielsen Harper shorts can be sewn up with 1m of fabric up to and including the extra large size, whereas the skirt requires a little more. The extra large is a 34" waist and a 44" hip.

The pattern includes shorts or a pleated skort, which sit just below the natural waistline has a modern silhouette, two lengths and a full lining.

Version one is the shorts with the curved patch pockets and requires just one metre of fabric. I thought this lovely cotton sateen would look beautiful sewn up into the shorts and you could pair them with either a white or black vest and black sandals.

Tessuti Esther Shorts

The Tessuti patterns Esther shorts pattern runs up to a size 16 - a 37" waist and 46" hip and only requires 0.85m of fabric.

They are a cute, simple modern pair of shorts and I love the fact the side seams sit forward from the hip and have been drafted in this way for an extra flattering fit.

I would use a nice cotton sateen or you could even make them in a classic denim and make them your 'these go with everything in my wardrobe' shorts.

Burda 6252 Skirt

Burda 6252 is a skirt pattern, which runs in sizes 8 to 18. The 18 is a 32 & 1/4" waist and a 41 & 3/4" hip.

It is a cute A-line button-down skirt with optional patch pockets and two hem lengths - mini and midi.

The mini length can be sewn up in one metre of fabric and I actually made this very skirt many years ago and still wear it all the time. I made it in our charcoal denim and wear it with thick tights in winter and bare legs in summer. It would also work very well in a classic indigo denim.

I think I did lengthen my skirt by a couple of inches, but a metre of fabric should still do the trick even if you do the same.

I hope you enjoyed my round up of patterns you can sew with a metre of fabric and can get busting those remnants and left over fabrics or sew something pocket friendly.

Have fun sewing!
