Embroidery Machine FAQ

► Should I choose an embroidery only machine or an embroidery and sewing machine?

The key factors in deciding between an embroidery only machine or a combined sewing and embroidery machine are whether you want to be able to perform both functions (some people will only want to embroider while others will want to be able to sew and embroider) and whether you have space for two machines. If you want to be able to sew and embroider and already own a sewing machine it will also depend on whether you would like to upgrade or change your current machine, in which case it might be worth looking at a combined machine, or if you would rather keep your current machine for sewing and purchase a separate embroidery machine. A big advantage of having two separate machines is that it allows you to progress multiple projects or multiple parts of projects at the same time.

► Why is embroidery hoop size important?

Each embroidery machine will have a maximum hoop size you can use – the smallest hoops are usually 100mm x 100mm and the largest is an incredible 460mm x 450mm. It is possible to sew larger designs using smaller hoops, but it requires ‘re-hooping’ of the fabric, sometimes multiple times. It can be tricky and time consuming trying to match the design up perfectly as you re-hoop and is much easier if the design will fit into one hoop to complete the stitch out. Therefore it is important to consider the sorts of designs you would like to stitch out now and to try to look ahead to the future so you can choose an embroidery machine with a maximum hoop size that will meet your long term needs as closely as possible.

Generally the more expensive the embroidery machine, the bigger the maximum hoop size so budget is also a key factor in this part of the decision making. It is also a good idea to check how many hoops are included with the machine when you purchase it, although you can usually purchase additional hoops separately to grow your collection as your embroidery addiction grows and we stock a wide range to keep you going!

► Can I import additional designs onto an embroidery machine?

Embroidery machines will always come with a number of built in designs, the more expensive the machine, the more designs are included. However, you can import additional designs to the machine. Some of the higher end, more modern machines will allow you to import designs via WiFi or an app and the more basic level models will allow you to import via a USB stick or your PC.

Brother, Husqvarna and Pfaff have an extensive online library of embroidery designs where, on compatible models, you can choose to purchase individual designs or sign up for a monthly subscription and access the entire library of thousands of designs.

Some of the higher end models will even allow you to create your own designs directly onto the machine and on other models digitising software can be used to achieve this. You can also buy embroidery designs from individual artists on marketplaces or websites, it is important to be aware that the stitch out quality can vary on these whereas the designs purchased from the machine brand will have been tried and tested for the quality of the stitch out.

► How easy is it to edit and customise designs on an embroidery machine?

Most modern embroidery machines will allow you to make simple edits such as flipping, rotating, moving or shrinking a design on the screen and it is easy to learn how to make these straightforward adjustments.

The higher end models often have larger, colour touch screens and are designed to work with more sophisticated software for more advanced editing options such as spacing, fine tuning stitch density and combining designs. A touch screen makes it even easier to control your edits and fine tune them rather than being limited by pre-set sizes.

Some of the higher end machines will even come with built in user guides and tutorials and the option to access new resources on a regular basis going forward. These are incredibly helpful in developing your embroidery skills and knowledge from the comfort of your own home and whenever is convenient for you.

We can work with you and take into account your budget to find the best options available to you and help you to get started. We promise it isn’t as complicated as it might sound.

► What sort of things do people make on an embroidery machine?

One of the wonderful things about embroidery machines is the endless creative possibilities. You can add embroidery designs to just about anything. Some people like to customise clothes they’ve purchased from a shop with unique designs, whilst others like to add embroidery designs to their own dressmaking or bag making creations. Quilters love the ability to use embroidery designs to enhance and elevate their quilting projects to another level combining them with more commonly used quilting techniques such as stippling. Home lovers enjoy adding embroidery designs to soft furnishings such as cushions, bed covers, table cloths or even towels for a truly personal touch. More advanced embroidery machines will also give you the opportunity to try techniques such as lace making, cutwork, felting and thread velvet.
