Wide Leg Trouser Sewing Patterns and Fabrics
Know Me 2053 Wide Leg Trousers (6-24)

One of the major advantages of sewing wide leg trousers is the fact they are easier to fit. You've still got to get the waist, crotch and hips right, but at least you don't have to worry about the thighs.
This wide leg trouser pattern is high waisted with belt loops and a fly front zip and pleats from the waistband on the front and back, giving them a lovely shape plus welt pockets for an optional sewing challenge.
Sizes: Runs from a 6-24. A size 6 is a 30.5” bust, 23” waist, 32.5” hip and the size 24 is 46” bust, 39” waist and 48” hip.
The fabric I chose is an ex-designer deadstock from Italy. A gorgeous 100% cotton melange, it has a beautiful texture, hangs and drapes well and is a neutral black/grey fleck colourway with almost a mini check effect.
All the fabrics I'm sharing are understated and neutral so they can be paired with lovely bright coloured knit tops, T- shirts and/or patterned or floral blouses. They would also work just as well for skirts and dresses too.

These wide leg trousers have a waist band and a quirky button down front piece resembling a sailor style trouser. They flare out from the knee, feature pockets on the back plus two front slash pockets.
Sizes: Runs from a 6-24 A size 6 is 30.5” bust, 23” waist, 32.5” hip and the size 24 is 46” bust, 39” waist and 48” hip.
I chose another ex designer deadstock fabric, which is an absolute bargain for 100% wool.
It is a subtle, understated Prince of Wales check and is the perfect weight for trousers, skirts and dresses.
It is smooth to the touch and feels silky against the skin.
Simplicity 8701 Wide Leg Trousers or Jeans (6-24)

These Simplicity wide leg trousers are styled as a jean on the pattern packet, but you can choose from a wide range of other woven fabrics to create multiple looks.
Sewing details include options for patch pockets, a fly front zip and button down fastening, or if you fancy an easier sew, choose the alternative waist tie version.
These wide leg trousers remind me of the True Bias Lander Pant pattern, which I've also featured later in the post.
These trousers have a lovely snug fit around the waist that can easily be dressed up or down for a smarter or more casual look.
Sizes: Runs from a 6-24 A size 6 is 30.5” bust, 23” waist, 32.5” hip and the size 24 is 46” bust, 39” waist and 48” hip.
I chose our cotton elastane fabric with a small, subtle houndstooth print in black on a beige/tan background.
It does have a tiny bit of give for extra comfort and is a lovely medium weight ideal for a more structured look.
True Bias Lander Pants and Shorts (0-18)

The True Bias Lander pants are a super popular pattern and I have seen so many amazing versions shared on social media.
Choose from shorts or trousers and play around with the length to make the cropped trouser option.
There are lots of fun design details including large, patch pockets on the front and patch pockets on the back, waist darts at the back and a waistband. I love the button down feature on the front for a contemporary look.
Sizes 0-18 A size 0 is a 26” waist, 34” hip and the size 18 is 38.5” waist, 46.5” hip.
I chose the same fabric as for Simplicity 8701 - the cotton elastane with a small, subtle houndstooth print in black, beige and tan.
True Bias Emerson Pants and Shorts (0-18)

The Emerson pants are also hugely popular and you can choose to sew up a cropped trouser, shorts or longer length trouser.
I'm sure one of the reasons this pattern is so popular is that they have all the benefits of a flat front waistband piece with pleats under the waistband to create a smart, fitted look at the front whilst having a comfy elasticated waist at the back for all day comfort
The waistband also has a mid or high rise option, depending on your preference and practical side pockets.
Sizes 0-18 A size 0 is a 26” waist, 34” hip and a size 18 is a 38.5” waist, 46.5” hip.
I chose the same fabric for the Emerson pants and the Rose trousers featured below.
Made by Rae Rose Trousers (XXS - 5X)

The Rose pants by Made by Rae are very similar to the Emerson trousers featuring a flat waistband piece at the front with options for pleats or box pleats combined with the comfort an elasticated waist at the back.
You also have options to make shorts, cropped or full length trousers.
Sizes – XXS – 5X. A size XXS is a waist 26.5”, hip 34.5” and a size 5X is a waist 51” and 59” hip.
I chose the same fabric for both the Rose and Emerson pants - a 100% wool, ex designer deadstock, which is a lovely weight, has great fluidity and would hang beautifully sewn up as either pair of these wide leg trousers, perfect for cooler weather.
You can also sew them up in a range of other fabrics including light to medium weight wovens, such as rayon, rayon blends, linens and linen blends, cotton sateens or chambray.
These patterns are both very versatile and with the right fabrics, you could make them for all seasons.
Have fun sewing!
