- Love it
My wife has been a dress maker for over 60 years and felt that with the new delicate (beautiful but tricky to work with) fabrics her 30 year old Pfaff sewing machine possibly needed upgrading. I have an interest in mixed media work and have been active in using free standing lace and cutwork not only in clothing but in wood and other hard materials. As such, accuracy in stitch-out is a prime concern. The Pfaff Creative Icon was bought to satisfy both these demands and I am pleased to say it has done that and more. Before buying I felt the big screen, the Sewnet facility and the Monitor App were all a bit of glitz and frippery. How wrong I was! The big screen allows a considerable amount of accurate editing and design placement without incurring any extra optician's bills, whilst stitch selection and creation can be done with clarity. I use the digitising software on my computer quite a lot and initially I felt the Sewnet facility would be not a lot of use but, in fact, I use it almost exclusively: pinging designs straight to the Icon via the Sewnet cloud rather than loading onto an USB stick. Designs are backed up on an external hard drive. (One thing to be aware of is that designs 'sent' from the Husqvarna/Pfaff computer software arrive in the Sewnet Cloud named 'Send' and overwrite other similarly named designs!)
The needle power of this machine is staggeringly impressive: very dense designs are handled with no fuss, no loss of speed or continuity. A large freestanding lace collar work recently executed was extremely dense ( I found it impossible to force a hand needle through the heavy parts) and took several hours to complete. In the past these jobs have been beset with broken threads, and inaccurately placed stitches and not from cheap machines either. The Icon just purred away for the whole time with just stops for bobbin filling. It was so reliable I got bored (and thirsty) left it to get on with the job and used the Sewnet Monitor App that I berated as a gimmick. My father was an engineer and constantly reiterated: "Never leave a machine unattended whilst it's running". Up to getting the Icon I would have agreed with him totally and would never have dared to do such a thing, but this machine has proved so reliable that for long jobs it can be left and the App works really well in alerting one to any stops.
On the dressmaking side the IDT system has always been good but, for us, this machine handles a whole range of difficult fabrics beautifully: thin organza, stretch powernets to stretchy faux leathers. We haven't had time yet to try out all the in-built stitches there are so many but we are keen to try the over-edge stitches as finishings for necklines, cuffs etc.
This machine is called a Creative Icon and it really encourages creativity. It is so reliable and precise it allows one to try new things. It handles the most difficult materials and threads totally within its stride - the nervous tensions that used to come with working with metallic threads and tapes are things of the past: just thread it up and sew it.
- Best embroidery machine I have ever used.
I am so impressed with this machine, it stitches out designs beautifully and is very easy to use. The inbuilt special techniques and video instructions are out of this world.
